Description
A fine and rare Aesthetic Movement Brownhills Kioto pattern ivory lidded large sugar bowl (or tea caddy?), dated August 22, 1883. The design is alleged to have been conceived by Christopher Dresser, who sold one-off patterns to various potteries around this time and is typical of his Japanese-influenced design. The earthenware bowl stands raised on four scalloped-shaped feet and has rounded ends and shell-shaped handles. The bowl has a domed, fitted shaped cover with a raised central finial. The body of the bowl and cover is printed in black with a blend of floral and tapestry panels within decorative patterned and lined borders. Among the patterns are a Japanese scene of cranes flying over a river with flowering hawthorn and Japanese sailing vessel, as well as a wading bird balanced on large lotus leaves on a pond. The bowl has a printed B.P.C. (Brownhills) mark to the base, along with the pattern name Kioto, as well as a printed registration mark dating the bowl to August 22, 1883. Overall condition is excellent, without loss, chips, or restoration. Measures 7.25" high, 7" long, and 5" in width.Buyer to pay for item plus shipping by credit card using Paypal.
