Terracotta Vessel 6" long by 3.75" wide from Nicaragua or Costa Rica made in the period 800-1300 AD. The style is known by two names - Zapateroware or Sacasa Striated cooking pot which were both of the Sacasa Striated style of making. For the cooking vessels the front end would be put into the fire & stirred from behind. The other use of these vessels, depending somewhat on the size, is for burial of treated remains for burial. Both have loops for suspension. (I have another one listed that is too small for cooking or burial but probably worn or hung at home.) This one measures 6" long & 3.75" wide; it has an opening 3.75" diameter; suspension loops at the rim. There are facial features that were applied for eyes, nose and mouth. There is no indication of any paint nor have I seen FEW that do. It was from the Pacific coastal area where Nicaragua and Costa Rica meet. The cultures pre-dated the country borders so it is difficult to say which it came from. More detailS below.
