Description
These interesting, very early algal fossils are "Oncolites" which are algae colonies that form spheres or oval shapes as differentiated from "Stromatolites" which are algal colonies forming cylindrical or tube shapes. We recently acquired some old stock material that contains considerably larger oncolite colonies than the fossils we have had for several years. These oncolites measure between a half and three quarters of an inch on the longest axis (11mm to 19mm). In addition to their larger size, many of these colonies have been preserved with a bit of iron oxide in the mix which makes for an outstanding display specimen. We were so impressed with the colorful nature of the fossil that we turned it over to our lapidary and the result is a polished end cut with cross sectioning of colonies on the cut and polished face and colonies weathering out on the all natural back side. They are taxonomically identified asGirvanella sp.
The material comes from the Lower Cambrian Chambliss Limestone Formation in San Bernardino County, California. Some research on the internet suggests that these larger colonies may come from lower (older) strata of the Chambliss Fm.
Check out our photos on this listing - we show the polished face and three closeups of individual colonies on the polished face. The specimen measures a
