    This is an extremely collectible plate of Coal Age plants. This is a beautiful example of Sphenophyllum "Flowers" and ferns from the Carboniferous Age of Pennsylvania. This unusual fossil plant consisted of a slender stem bearing whorls of wedge-shaped leaves. This distinct plant became extinct at the end of the Pennsylvanian. The striking branch is preserved as a thin film of white pyrophyllite on black shale - quite striking! This large branch of Sphenophyllum exhibits fabulous detail and extremely nice, natural white coloration. The slender stem is easily seen, and the individual, spatulate leaves are clearly defined. And there are also nice fossil ferns preserved on the plate for good measure. This is a beautiful, impressive plate of fossil plants from the Coal Mines of Pennsylvania.
