These appear to be plant fossils from the mid Devonian Charlevoix Limestone Formation of Michigan. My research acknowledged their existence in the marine limestone formation but never identified them to any taxonomic level. My examinations show they coal and not mere carbon films that dissolve in bleach. I can't tell if they were growing under water of simply washed away form shore, but there are brachiopod fossils in the matrix. Anyone interested in Devonian flora should give this a look. Fossils are covered in acetone-soluble nail polish, which can be removed with hardware store acetone. Try not to use nail polish remover.
