    Description

    Childs Blue Staffordshire Transferware Miniature
    Ironstone Cup & Saucer Set
Canadian View Georgeville Lake Series Quebec
    Samuel Alcock Staffordshire, England 1840
    This is scarce miniature cup
    and saucer set
    ,
originally part of a complete childs early ironstone tea set,
circa 1840. Although childs teasets and dinner services are not uncommon, wares in this pattern are extremely hard to find. The
cup stands 2 inches tall with a London shaped handle. The saucer
    measures 4-
    1/2 inches
    in diameter.
    The
    set wa
s transfer printed in a classic cobalt blue.
    The
    set
decorated with a rare Canadian View from the Lake Series (based on Bartlett's Views), showing Georgeville, Quebec, a
    lakeside village with
hillside home and mountains in the background. The scene wraps around the perimeter of the cup, and is complemented scene on the saucer, all encircled with classical scrolling and medallions around the inner rim, a
fine example of the romanticized scenery made for the Canadian market and adopted by the Victorian potteries.
The set is unmarked. The form and style is in the manner of
Frances Morley (Ashworth), a pottery in the Staffordshire region of
England in the early to mid-19th century.
    The
    set
is in great condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. Glaze crazing, minor wear, consistent with age. Richly detailed and classically elegant, it is just amazing that this little set of plates belonged to a child well over 150 years ago!
Children's and miniature romantic transferware of this quality is quite scarce and highly sought after. The blue transfer is very striking, making a stunning complement to any collection of early children's wares, and the pattern makes splendid gift!
