    Description

ESTATE FIND, University of Wisconsin textile professor and world traveller.  Very nice condition, no holes or stains and only some very minor soil possible.  Reportedly purchased in the 1980s.
All wool Andean Indian woman's manta measuring  36-38 inches long and 32-33 inches wide, somewhat irregular.
This is an all wool woman's garment, quite nicely woven. It is made from handspun natural dark brown wool, hand-woven on an Andean loom.  The base fabric is natural very dark brown wool, fairly uniform in color, almost black.  The two panels are sewn together with a simple zig-zag stitch. The two panels are similar, as can be seen in the first photo. The dyes appear to be largely vegetal, since the colors are so mellow.  I would guess the date to be ca. 1960-1980. There is no tubular edging, just a plain selvage finish which shows only minor wear.  Both sides can be seen in the photos, since the figural bands do exhibit somewhat differently on the two sides.
Condition is Very Good, light wear, no repairs noticed, light soil possible.     I do have this weaving in a sealed bag with a few moth balls, so it will have a slight odor when delivered.
This is an authentic indigenous woman's garment, not a modern commercial product, all handmade on a traditional Andean ground loom
