DESCRIPTION
This is a beautiful
Aesthetic Movement
Doulton Burslem brown and white transferware plate dates from 1882. The Doulton & Co. (Ltd), Nile Street, Burslem, Staffordshire, was formed in 1878 with the purchase of the Pinder Bourne & Co.
Decorated in the Japanesque style with panels of exotic birds on a river's shore, bamboo, cherry blossoms, and geometric pattern, the images juxtaposition perfectly illustrate the Aesthetic style and oriental influence of the day.
This dinner plate measures approx. 10 1/4" in diameter and is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, stains or hairlines; some tiny rough spots on the rim (see picture) that are not chips or nibbles – just teeny tiny pits in the glaze, inherent to make. Some utensil marks are visible upon close inspection, if held to light, but transfer print is in perfect shape and it is unnoticeable. The plate is impressed as shown with the Doulton Burslem mark, and has the British registration mark for earthenware August 4, 1880, the introduction year, and is incised with the month and year of make, November 1882.
A lovely example for your collection.
