USSR Currency 25 Ruble Note Series 1961
Cold War Era authentic Soviet Union twenty-five ruble note, depicting the father of the Bolshevik Party, and the October Revolution of 1917, Vladimir Lenin.
The banknotes are from the 1961 series of Soviet rubles, the "Khrushchev Reform," and were in common circulation at the time of the Soviet collapse. The Khrushchev devaluation had been the most moderate adjustment (out of six,) of the Soviet ruble, and the longest lasting currency reform of the USSR. They were to be phased out by new notes of the 1991 Pavlov Reform (see my
other items
).
Lenin was born, a hereditary nobleman, in 1870, as Vladimir Ilych Ulyanov. A child of privilege, he would become the most notorious revolutionary of the Twentieth Century and contribute in no small way to the deaths of millions.
A rambunctious toddler with a head one size too big for his body, he had a childhood habit of toppling over. The son of an imperial regional inspector of schools, he received a thorough education, and was an excellent student.
Imperial Russia of the late 1880s was grappling with a particularly bloody crop of revolutionaries. One of them happened to be Lenin's older, much idolized brother, Aleksandr. He became radicalized at university and got involved in a plot to assassinate Tsar Alexander III. It did not go to plan. Apprehended, he was tried and executed in 1887.This marked Lenin's turning point. From that moment on, the destruction of the House of Romanov and the Russian Empire became his life's work. Thirty years after his brother's hanging, he accomplished his goals.
Following the overthrow of the Tsarist regime in February of 1917 by moderate socialists, the radical Marxists of Lenin's Bolshevik party staged a coup and overthrew the Provisional Government in October of that year. What followed was a nearly six year long civil war which killed more Russians than had died in World War I. It is estimated that some 1.5 million troops, and around 8 million civilians died as a result of combat, and from famine and disease.
Immediately following the civil war, and the bloody consolidation of Bolshevik power, Lenin's health underwent a rapid decline. He died in 1924 of a cerebral aneurysm, bequeathing to the world his heir, Josef Stalin.
The denominations of the polyglot notes are printed in Russian, and the official languages of the Soviet Union: Ukrainian, Belarusian, Uzbek, Kazakh, Georgian, Azeri, Lithuanian, Moldovan, Latvian, Kyrgyz, Tajik, Armenian, Turkmen, and Estonian.
